Adults $15.00
Seniors $10.00

“After a three-year hiatus, we had a successful return of the Indianapolis Scottish Highland Games and Festival last year! The SSI Board of Trustees along with the Scottish Foundation of Indianapolis are happy to announce that the 2024 Indianapolis Highland Scottish Games & Festival will be officially back this year. The event will be taking place on October 12th.”

Highland Athletics
Caber, sheaf, hammer, stone put, weight-over-bar -- the heavy events are what make Highland athletics unique. These events originated from great gatherings held by Highland clans in medieval times where chieftans selected their strongest warriors to compete and inspire others. Some say the games may have even pre-dated Scotland itself!

Entertainment
Pipe bands, traditional and modern celtic bands, dancers, and a talented cast of actors presenting the Scottish Royal Court - all working in concert to bring a lively cultural experience ye'll nae be forgettin.

The tastes
Guests who are of legal age are welcome to come learn about (and sample) fine Scottish whisky. Take in the stories of distilleries and learn about how Scotland's famous Uisge Beatha (water of life) is made and how it may be best enjoyed - with all your friends from the Scottish Society of Indianapolis of course!

The Location
This year, the Indianapolis Scottish Highland Games and Festival will be at the Marion County Fairgrounds. Guests and participants will find ample parking, comfortable facilities, all the food and beverages we love, and plenty of space for showing off just how bonny your knees look in that kilt - and if you dont' have a kilt, you'll find no shortage of suppliers and information to get yourself fully kitted out!

Milky Way Field Trip

PLEASE READ!!! CHANGE IN SETUP LOCATION

September 7, 2024 8:00pm - 12:00am
McCloud Nature Park, 8518 Hughes Rd, North Salem, IN 46165

The forecast apps look like things should be good for night photography at McCloud.  Forecasted temp at 8:00 pm is 58* with 44% humidity with temps dropping into the  upper 40's.

Sunset is at 8:12 with the waxing crescent moon setting at 8:59.  Milky Way Core visibility should be around 9:45-12:45.I would suggest getting there no later than 7:45.

PLEASE NOTE:

Roberts Camera is hosting an astrophotography workshop and will be in the area behind the maintenance building where we were last time until 10:00.  So we will be in the field in the center of the Arboretum. This location is just on the other side of the trees that were to our right when we were out there before.  There is plenty of space to set up.  I would suggest parking at the Nature Center and taking the path to the right of the Nature Center.

I have attached a screen shot from the Photopills Planner as well as a scan of the park map showing the location. There are some features in this area that could prove to make some interesting foregrounds such as park benches, a meandering trail and the bee observation house.  We also shouldn't be affected by cars leaving the park.

Gear needed:

  • camera with wide-angle lens

  • tripod and ballhead

  • lens heater or one set of disposable hand warmers (Hot Hands brand or similar) & a

  • rubber band

  • chair

  • water and snacks

Milky Way Field Trip

August 24, 2024 8:00pm - 12:00am
McCloud Nature Park, 8518 Hughes Rd, North Salem, IN 46165

We will meet in the grassy area behind the maintenance building.  The Indiana Astronomical Society has some concrete pads that they use to set up their telescopes...we will be in that area.

There is enough parking for a few cars in front of the building and additional parking at the nature center.  You can find the building by following the drive from the entrance to the nature center parking lot.  Just before you enter the parking lot, you will see the drive for the maintenance building to your left.  Follow the drive back to the maintenance building.

Sunset is 8:29pm so I would suggest we meet around 8:00 to get set up for blue hour foreground shots.  Blue hour is from 8:46-8:57 with full dark around 10:00pm.  Core visibility is from 10:07pm - 1:31am.

Gear needed:

Neighborhood Walk: Woodruff Place

  • 735 Woodruff Place East Drive Indianapolis, IN, 46201 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Our walks will continue in August with a visit to Woodruff Place -- a neighborhood on the East side of town, between East 10th Street, East Michigan Street, east of the Cottage Home neighborhood by about a half a mile.

"This gracious historic community, located just one mile east of downtown Indianapolis, is recognized as Indianapolis’s first planned residential suburb. In a beautiful park-like setting, you will find fine examples of lovely Victorian era homes, esplanades with fountains and statuary, and an ambiance that is unlike any other. Though not exactly a convenient location in 1872, (nearly an hour by wagon from the center of town), local advertisements were successful in attracting curious visitors eager to see what could possibly be so special about this place where the cost of a 40 x 80 foot lot exceeded a year’s wage." Woodruff Place remained an independent town until the costs of maintenance and the resolution of a lawsuit forced integration into the city of Indianapolis in 1962. Woodruff Place was included in the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

Our host will be Tom Abeel, deeply involved with the boards of the community and current President of Historic Urban Neighborhoods of Indianapolis.

We will meet Tom at the Woodruff Town Hall, 735 Woodruff Place, East Drive at 7PM. As days will be getting shorter, again, members are welcomed to come earlier for shooting opportunities.

DUE TO WEATHER CONCERNS, THIS EVENT IS BEING MOVED TO 4/1/2023

MEMBERS ONLY

Note: THIS IS AN EVENING SHOOT; check club Facebook and Group IO email for any weather related updates.

Meet at the front of the park by the pond with the lighthouse. We will begin our evening shooting in this area and at the waterfall. We will then drive a little further into the park and do some shots of burning steel wool. This will include a four-minute walk on a trail so bring a flashlight (not just your phone) as it will be dark as we walk out. We will then drive to a second location for more burning wool. Program has been approved by appropriate officials but please follow any on-site instructions for everyone's safety.

Gear: camera, wide angle lens (24-70 will work), and remote shutter. Shutter speed will be bulb mode, F16-22, ISO 100. (If you use a 2 sec timer you will miss part of the action as the wool only burns for 15 sec, so remote is recommended) Focus point will be the person spinning the wool; they will be momentarily lit so we can set focus.
