Let's Learn About Jiu-Jitsu

Meeting Location: Zoom

Christiana Ganahl will  help us learn about Jiu-Jitsu in time for the Club field trip to the International Open IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championship in Indianapolis.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) fundamentals focus on using leverage, technique, and timing to control and submit opponents, primarily on the ground. Core principles include positional hierarchy (guard, side control, mount, back), energy efficiency, frames for space creation, and essential movements like bridging and shrimping to escape bad positions.

Though not a photographer herself, Christiana is no stranger to the focal points of a BJJ competition. Since 2022, she has been on the mats almost daily, working on her technique and preparing for the next competition. She has had over 70 matches and is particularly familiar with the IBJJF structure and ruleset, having competed in both regional tournaments and world championships through the organization.

She looks forward to sharing her perspective on BJJ photography and meeting those who come to the Indianapolis event (where she will be joining as a competitor)

Resources:

Top-rated Jiu-Jitsu photographers recognized for capturing the intensity, artistry, and movement of BJJ include Julius F. Garrido, known for his artistic and AI-enhanced, moody, and high-impact imagery. Another highly regarded photographer is David Brown, recognized for capturing the individual expression of BJJ and skate culture. Other notable photographers often featured in BJJ media include @khvisions on Instagram, who is frequently praised for high-quality, moody action shots.

Key Jiu-Jitsu Photographers & Content Creators

  • Julius F. Garrido: Specializes in dramatic, high-contrast BJJ photography and uses AI for post-production, based in Denver, Colorado.

  • @khvisions (Instagram): Frequently highlighted in BJJ communities for capturing intense, high-quality, moody action shots.

  • David Brown: Known for capturing the individualistic and artistic aspects of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

  • @eueymedia (Instagram): Noted for capturing compelling, moody, and high-contrast BJJ, especially in tournament settings.

  • Mike Calimbas

  • Zroe Photography

What to Look For
Top Jiu-Jitsu photographers excel in capturing precise technical details, emotional intensity (the "grind"), and, in many cases, dramatic lighting and high-contrast, moody color tones

Lighting for a Home Studio-Greg Kicinski

Winter won't go away. Spring monsoon season is upon us. Too cold, too wet, too gray. But it's time to take some family photos! What to do when natural light won't cooperate?

Join us tonight as Greg Kicinski guides us through use of basic speedlights and modifiers. Not big studio rigs, just things you already have or might want to get, so you can create masterpieces in your studio at home. We will begin with a short presentation and then have both studios and each other as models to practice. This is a learning program designed for the amateur, less experienced photographer but presented by a real professional!

Bring your camera and lens, tripod, speedlight(s), trigger and questions. We will have access to Focus On's modifiers but will NOT be using any studio lights.

"My wife and I have lived in Carmel Indiana for 22 years. I have spent the last 37 years developing and delivering major transportation projects around the state of Indiana. It has been a passion of mine to help improve the community that we live in (maybe after a little pain), through making our roadways more efficient and safer. However, I have decided that it is now time to more fully pursue another passion that I have had for over 20 years. I love photographing people. I love putting people in the perfect light for a headshot or individual or family portrait, or catching them in their peak music or sports performance or their interactions at special events. To me it is all about catching them at their best and then watching their reaction to the results.

I am happy to announce that I have recently opened my new studio here in Carmel so that I can provide the highest quality photo sessions year round regardless of weather conditions while using professional lighting for amazing results."        Greg Kicinski

Telling the Natural Story: Russell Graves

Telling the Natural Story: Russell Graves

Meeting Location: Zoom

DESCRIPTION
Telling the Natural Story is a collection of ideas on how you can improve your nature photography by talking a story-telling approach to documenting a subject.  In this webinar, Russell will walk you through some practical advice on how you can improve your photography and your story-telling abilities.

BIO
Raised in rural Texas, Russell is the product of a modest, blue-collar upbringing, a stalwart work ethic, and a family who put no bounds on his imagination and creativity. When Russell was a junior in high school, he wrote a research paper for his end-of-year English project. The research paper (which he still has today), titled simply Wildlife Photography, earned him an "A" for the project. Still, more importantly, the mini-tome served as a manifesto of sorts that would define his life's work.

When he was 19, he had his first photographs and article published in a magazine. When he was 20, he earned his first magazine cover. By his own admission, the work now appears marginal and sophomoric. It was the spark, however, that ignited the fire to keep him going and perfect his creative craft.

After earning a degree in agriculture education from East Texas State University, Russell went out to the sparsely populated Texas Panhandle, where he was hired to teach agriculture science for the Childress Independent School District. Upon earning his degree, Russell describes the experience as surreal. He's the first in his family to earn a college degree. Upon the conference of his baccalaureate honors, he witnessed his father cry for the first time in his life. It's a moment of pride that has stuck with Russell and driven him to be the best he can be at whatever he chooses to do. As a result, in his 16-year teaching career, he was named Texas Agriscience Teacher of the Year on three occasions, a finalist for National Agriscience Teacher of the Year twice, and won just about every major award conferred on those in his former profession. He also built a solid reputation as a top Texas photographer and writer during that time.

Upon leaving teaching in 2009, Russell continued his life's work by capturing the people and places outside of city limits in innovative and authentic ways. In the ensuing years, he continued to build on his experience and churn out content for clients through magazine pieces, advertising campaigns, television projects, and numerous books. In addition, he also worked with a small West Texas town to help them develop a marketing strategy and put together development deals that would bring jobs and prosperity to that little corner of rural Texas.

In 2018, Russell started leading photographic workshops and sharing his knowledge and love of the outdoors and photography. Since then, Russell has led nearly 500 guests on adventures worldwide.
Russell says he feels like he's come full circle by combining his love of photography with his teaching ability.

In the media, Russell's been called a rural renaissance man, recognized as one of the top photographers in Texas, and praised by editors, art directors, and audiences alike for his ability to connect people and places through his written, spoken, and photographic stories. He's had nearly a million words published, authored six books, has had thousands of images grace the pages of magazines and advertisements all over the world (including about 600 magazine covers), is an in-demand speaker, has photographed some of the most prominent people in our country, and is the owner of two businesses. Still, he insists that his most significant accomplishments fall under the heading of father, husband, brother, son, and friend.

When he's not in the field teaching or doing projects for one of his clients, Russell is found on his beloved Hackberry Farm driving his tractor and doing tasks that benefit the land and her denizens therein. He now lives a mile from the small stock farm on which he was raised. Black dirt and creek water is a powerful poultice.

His parents are still proud of him.

Russell has been featured several times on B & H Photo's podcasts over the past few years.  Here is a link to them. I thought you might find them interesting.  I haven't listened to them yet but plan to do so.

Scott Kinzie: "From Vision to the Final Result"

Meeting Location: Zoom

"From Vision to the Final Result"

presenter: Scott Kinzie

“From Vision to the Final Result” is a program Scott presented to the Duneland Photography Club in Valparaiso this past November. Scott will showcase images from his favorite locations and share the story behind each one. He'll explain why he took them, his vision for the final result, and how he processed them.

Scott has been active with Photo Venture Camera Club since November of 2011. "I had just purchased my first digital camera and wanted to learn how to use all the features my camera offered. I also wanted to meet others who enjoyed photography and learn from them as well.

On my very first meeting I knew this was the club for me. Everyone greeted me and I felt comfortable from the beginning. I discovered PVCC through an internet search on local camera clubs. I enjoy the club for several reasons.

The field trips are a learning experience, and I will always remember the field trip we took to the UP of Michigan in October of 2013.  We hired Rod and Marlene Planck as tour guides and in spite of the rain, we all enjoyed the scenic north woods of Michigan.

Other highlights of our club are the competitions and critiques. I shoot with a Canon R5 body with several lenses. My favorite lenses are my 100-400 zoom with a 1.4 extender. I also enjoy my macro lens. Both work well with my passion for nature photography. PVCC gave me the confidence to go out on my own to become a gallery member at Art IN Hand in Zionsville, as well as show and sell my images at several art fairs in the Midwest every summer.

At my shows, I encourage new photographers to join a photo club, and I always mention PVCC when talking with them. I think the best part of joining PVCC are the friends I’ve made and the many times we’ve gone out on our own photo ventures."

Remembering 9/11 and All Who Have Served to Keep Us Free - Memorial Tour

We will be having a Photo Walk along the downtown canal to remember and photograph the 9/11, Medal of Honor memorial, and the USS Indianapolis Memorial.

We are Meeting at the 9/11 Memorial: Indiana 9/11 Memorial: 421 W Ohio St, Indianapolis, IN 46202

Other locations we will visit are:

  • (9/11 Memorial is next to the IFD  Fire House #13: 439 W Ohio St, Indianapolis, IN 46202)

  • Medal of Honor Memorial: 650 West Washington St, on the canal, Indianapolis

  • USS Indianapolis Memorial: 692 Ellsworth St, on the canal, Indianapolis

Every American will forever feel the impact of the September 11, 2001 attacks. It is a hallow feeling that still resides in the hearts of us all. In the brief moments it took to execute the attacks, our lives changed forever; we realized our country was not impervious to outsiders, nor were we impervious to pain.

Established in 2010, and expanded for the 20th anniversary in 2021, the Indiana 9/11 Memorial honors those who perished in the 9/11 attacks, and the United States service members who have lost their lives since in the War on Terror. Today we join together to compassionately honor and remember the 2,975 individuals who were killed on September 11, 2001, in the terrorist attacks on America, as well as those who were injured during the attacks, and the many who rose in service in response, the first responders, volunteers, rescue and recovery workers, uniformed safety personnel, and the hundreds of thousands of others who serve, or have served in our armed forces here at home and overseas.

We will also visit the other memorials along the canal: The Medal of Honor Memorial and the USS Indianapolis Memorial. This is the 80th Anniversary of the loss of the USS Indianapolis.  I have met several of the survivors and am a close friend Karen Fuller the daughter of Richard Thelen (aka. Pops). His story of survival is amazing and one I will never forget and always be grateful for. Come remember these great heros and honor them with beautiful photographs.

We are also collecting your photos of the 9/11 Memorial and any other Memorial you wish to share!  We will put these into a slideshow to share with the club before the next meeting during social hour.  OR if it rains out our canal walk, we will share them during today's meeting. Please send them to me @ jennifer.spence1124@gmail.com.

PVCC paid members have an opportunity to photograph the Indians game on Thursday, August 7, 2025, the game starts at 6:35 PM.

Registration is limited to the first twelve (12) registrants. You must be a paid member of PVCC, sign the Victory Field and Indianapolis Indians GENERAL RELEASE AND WAIVER, and also have a current PVCC waiver on file. CLICK HERE TO REGISTER

Adam Pintar, Senior Director of Brand, Marketing and Communications and head photographer of the Indians will be our host. He will meet with us at 4:30 PM to give us instructions and a brief summary of his go to photography techniques and recommendations.

The tickets are free and we will have great access to photo areas around Victory Field.
